Frequently Asked Question about Automatic Driving Lessons

Have questions about learning to drive an automatic car? We’ve answered the most common ones below so you know exactly what to expect before booking your lessons in Sheffield.

Press the brake firmly, make sure the gear lever is in “P” or “N,” then start the engine. Once ready, shift to “D” while holding the brake, then gently press the accelerator.

“L” (low gear) is used on steep climbs, descents, or when towing. It keeps the car in lower gears to give more power and engine braking for better control.

Select “2” on hilly or slippery roads. It limits the transmission to second gear, giving better traction and stopping the car from shifting up too quickly.

Manual cars are cheaper to buy and maintain, while automatics are easier to drive, especially in city traffic. If your goal is convenience and comfort, automatic is usually the better choice.

For short stops, keep the car in “D” and hold the brake. Use “N” or “P” only for longer waits, as constantly shifting to neutral doesn’t improve fuel use and can cause wear.

Press the brake pedal smoothly until the car halts. For parking, shift to “P,” apply the handbrake, then turn off the engine. This secures the car and prevents rolling.

Always use the handbrake when parking, especially on slopes. It adds safety by locking the wheels and reduces pressure on the transmission.

Older automatics did, but modern systems like CVT and dual-clutch are very fuel-efficient. In many cases, they match or even beat manual cars on fuel economy.

A CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) has no fixed gears. It uses belts and pulleys to deliver smooth, seamless acceleration and often improves fuel efficiency in city driving.
